My book is about my journey as a quilter. It is about the things that inspire me and places I have been. It is about trying new things and finding connections between old and new.
We all have those moments when you want to drop everything to try a new idea that just popped up in your head. I had many of those while I was working on the quilts for the book. Among the things I dropped were some quilting tools and rules! Each experiment was a quest for new block and yet another quilt.
What are Free-Form blocks?
Free-Form blocks are abstract interpretations of traditional quilt blocks. They are nothing but geometrical shapes with gentle curves and chopped off points. Same basic shapes and forms found in arts and crafts all over the world. They reflect the nature of all things handmade. No two are alike and each has personality of its own. Once I let go of the straight lines it was possible to make almost every pattern into a block without major calculations required for traditional quilt blocks. All I had to do was stack some squares and cut!
This collection of 15 quilts draws on handmade crafts from three continents to create a style that’s at once traditional and modern, artistic and practical. A simple stack, cut, shuffle, and stitch technique makes the sewing fun for quilters of any level. Perfection is not required! The book provides alternate setting suggestions for each project, plus an inspiring photo gallery of the crafts that shaped her style. Making these quilts is the perfect way to expand your creative horizons.
